Welcome to SingleSpeedBike.co.uk one of the only sites on the web deedicated to all things Single Speed and Fixed Wheel! Having taken the plunge 3 years ago moving from a mountain bike to riding a fixed wheel bike I understand how hard it is to find out all the info you need about Single Speed/ Fixed Wheel bikes so I've compiled as much info as I can in one place. Within this site you will discover exactly what these bikes are all about, how to get one and reviews of some of the off the peg bike out there at the moment. I hope you find this info useful, good luck with the moe to riding fixed, believe me you won't regret it!
So, What's it all about? In basic terms Fixed wheel/single speed bikes defy modern bike design by shunning the idea that someone needs 18-26 gears to ride about town. Instead single speeds have only one gear lowering the need for maintenance, making a lighter, more streamlined bike and also seeming to make the whole experience of riding a bike seem more pure (!) Fixed wheel bikes then take this one step further by removing the ability to coast, i.e. if you pedal backwards the back wheel will also go backwards. |

Riding fixed really does change the experience you have when riding a bike. You begin to feel in tune with the road as every movement you make with your legs is transferred through to the drive of the wheel, ultimately you feel a lot more in control over what is happening.
Admittedly riding a fixed wheel bike can have its problems, it's extremely likely to make you ride like a complete lunatic (you just can't help but go really really fast.) You will annoy bus drivers and painfully slow mountain bikers. People will comment on your bike and are more that likely to call you a poser or say that you have a "fashion" bike. Believe me though the fun of riding them by far outweighs any of these issues, riding them is just so much fun!
So, enough preaching about riding a single speed/fixed wheel. Please use the links at the top of the page to find out a bit more about Fixed.Single Speed bikes, how to either build or buy one straight off the peg, reviews of some of the bikes available at the moment and also a bit of bike porn, enjoy!
